How to Become Game Designer, Without Degree!

Hello Everyone!

Hope you all are doing great. This is my 1st Post on LinkedIn so I may make a few mistakes, so apologies for that.

Who Am I?

My Name is "Muhammad Usman" AKA L1nux3rr0r AKA TheUsmanKai (PCbots Labs) Founder of "Mysticbots Studio" and have successfully delivered many Games.

Can I become a Game Designer?

Now, come back to the real deal. How do you make a career as a Game Designer? 1st point is that there is NO shortcut in Life, Only Constant Effort. Do what you like to do, otherwise you will give-up some day and all your effort will be wasted. There are many people who are born with skills, but I am NOT one of them. I really had to work hard to become master of something. So I will assume you are just like me, otherwise you would not be reading this. Yes, anyone can become a Game Designer. But only if you are passionate about it and willing to step outside your comfort zone. Game Designing is a Skill and a Skill can be learned.

Will I need a Degree or Qualification?

NO, not at all. Now a days, the trend of studies have changed. Everything is available online. You even don't need to go to college. I have conducted many job interviews and I never ask anyone about their degree. Only Experience and Vision of person matters.

What skills does a Game Designer have?

Ohhhhh man, it's a little scary but it is also fun. Game Designer is one of most important person in development of a Game. It takes at least 2 Years to understand the complete development of Game and Simulations Design.

Game Designing and Development Process?

A good game needs a good story and only a good gamer can write a good Game story. The Process involves a Game Planner, Character Artist, Level Designer, Team of Programmers, 3D modeler, Musicians, UI/UX Designers, Gamification and Project Manager. Game Designer joins all the pieces together and keeps an eye on the Quality of the Game. A Game Designer uses player feedback to help improve the Game.

Where Do I start to become a Game Designer?

First, start playing different games and observe them. This will help you understand the differences between a good and a bad game. Now take a piece paper and start writing your Game ideas. Writer about your game character. Doodle your game Character. You also need to learn basic sketching. You can Email me at usman@mysticbots.com so I can mail you related books. Create a Character on paper and make a story for your game.

You will need to learn following things:

Basic Sketching
Writing a Game Story
Create Mockup and Concept idea of Game
Concept Art of Game Environment
Create GDD(Game Design Document) and Learn Game Mechanics
Photoshop and Illustrator for 2D Graphics
3D Max or Blender for 3D Games.
Game Engines (i.e. Unity3D, Game Maker, Unreal Engine etc.) for Game Development.

Get a job as a Game Designer. I will recommend you to find any teacher or Internship in any gaming studio. Internship is always more effective than Game Design Studies from any institution.

Work hard and believe in yourself, even when no one else believes you!
